Health classes explained

The distinctions between Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: their definitions and what factors determine which category applies to you.

Carriers assign term insurance pricing using rate class. Terminology shifts between organizations, yet the hierarchy is consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes marketed as Super Preferred or Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, with surcharges added for increased-risk applicants. Those with tobacco habits occupy a parallel bracket at higher premium levels.

What underwriters look at

Physical measurements (height and weight) and readings (blood pressure, cholesterol levels), parental history of coronary disease or malignancy diagnosed before age 60, vehicle record, medication history, job classification and recreational habits, and any tobacco or nicotine application. The top rating demands excellent marks across essentially everything; Preferred tier allows minor issues; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate controlled disorders including managed high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

The health query is designed for truthful self-assessment: Excellent corresponds with Preferred Plus tier, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus and Average with Standard. Pricing is built on your chosen level; after underwriting, the carrier establishes your confirmed tier. In situations of ambiguity, get quotes for multiple levels to evaluate, then allow the underwriting to confirm. Being too optimistic about your health category won't reduce your final price—it only makes the initial estimate less reliable.

Susman Insurance Agency has the knowledge to match you with carriers whose requirements are more flexible for your particular situation, an advantage that typically outweighs the listed rates.
